Hello Everyone,
I'll bet many of you will be able to help me. I just purchased a Singer
404 slant needle machine and while it has many of the attachments, it
doesn't have a buttonhole attachment. I've looked in the archives and
have learned a good deal more about what I may need but wanted to be
double sure I knew what to look for. So here it goes: Since it's a slant
needle I'll need the #160743 which commonly come in a dark red case (opens
like a treasure chest) or the oblong pink-cased attachments would work as
well, right? And if there's an attachment that is listed, say for the
301, it'd be compatible with my 404 because both are slant needle
machines. Correct?

Thanks so much for any other advice you may have as well. I'm very
excited to get into this hobby (and have heard good things about the 404)
but am doing my homework as I go along.:) After cleaning the machine,
I'll start by learning how to sew a straight line, then down the road
sometime think about buttonholes, haha.

Thanks,
Epodunk

In case some people do not recall... the 404 is the (just as
sturdy, no less able) straight stitch sibling to the infamous
singer 401/403 but it does not accept the cams used in the
sibling swing needle (ZZ) models. The 404 uses special
attachments to acheive decorative or ZZ style stitches

I do not know about the # 160743 number you specified .

but as far as i can remember ... in general ,your slant needle
reasoning is correct. Most all Singer slant needle
attachments/feet will work with all the slant needle machines.

if the pink case model has been nicknamed the "Easter Egg case"
then i believe that is considered a good choice by those who know
more

Also from my past research and recollection, something called
the "Professional Button Holer" (and it also comes in a certain
box ??) is another good and desired choice.

FWIW - There is also a ZZ attachment that exists which comes with
it own set of discs/cams that will give you most all the fancy
decorative stitches that the 401/403 can make.

Forgot to add this,

IMHO ....

If you **really** like the 401/403/404 series and if you plan to
do **lots** of ZZ related sewing i would reccomend you try to
find at least a 403 with the ZZ cams to do the ZZ stitching

because why ?

as well as they may work, the attachments must wobble the fabric
to and fro to get the ZZ stitches and the ZZ machines just swing
the needle. That always semed problematic to me.
