.....I've got to ask.

I plead ignorance, a complete lack of knowledge, it's something that's
beyond my ken! :-)

What's with all the initials, DD, DBIL, DS etc? Yes I understand the kith
and kin bit, but I don't understand why the 'D' at the beginning.

D = "Dear" It was already an established convention when I found
Usenet ten years ago. If it was from a post I wrote a bit ago, "DS"
means Dear Sister rather than Dear Son.

Yup, I am sentimental about them. (Dear) 8-)

Ah, then you must have been inhabiting a different corner of usenet to me!
Something I'd never come across before until I found this particular NG.

Dear me! I think it's because this is so many women in one place. We're all
so kind and polite and supportive... I'm frequenting a German recipe
newgroup where you find loads of men who are all keen to show eachother
who's the cleverest, the best cook, the best whatever. Basically the old
'who's got the biggest ... ego' thing. You hardly get a thread like the K.
of Aragaon one, where folks flock in to praise somebody's work. Mostly, it's
harsh criticism.

Hey, I alway read the D as dearest. ;-))

Just my personal opinion Ursula, but don't men always have to spray the
decks with testosterone. They seem to have to show how manly they are or
the best at whatever.
