I'm up to my ears making another tartan skirt for DGD. This
one is not a full blown kilt, thank goodness. It's what is
called an "Aboyne" or "Nationals" skirt like:
http://www.tartanweb.com/shop/highland_dancing/national/skirts__plaids/ladies_aboyne_skirt.html

However, I'm pleating it rather than gathering it to the
waistband. It require lots of precise measuring and
basting. Almost 5 yards of fabulous Scottish tartan,
pleated in soft 3/4" pleats to DGD's 25.25" waist, with
additional grow-room in the band. I'll be done with it this
afternoon, then I'm planning on starting the matching vest.
These are from fabrics DGD's dance teacher brought back from
Scotland last summer. The tartan is to die for!

Beverly, taking a quick break, now back to work...

DGD needs a blouse like this:
http://www.tartantown.com/blouse_DABL003.html

with a convertible dickie like:
http://65.109.82.231/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=MK&Product_Code=01-004&Category_Code=HJHE
for certain dances.

I bought McCalls # 5322:
http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M5322.htm?search=5322&page=1

This will give me the basic shape. It comes in a woman's
size 4, so it should come close to fitting DGD (I could not
find a child's pattern anything like what I needed). I'm
going to use the sleeve from v.A, with the body from v.C,
make the sleeve fuller and longer with an elastic casing at
the bottom, place the opening with buttons down the center
back, and alter the front neckline, squaring it off for the
unadorned look, and placing buttons and buttonholes for
attaching the dickie.

But it's "close". ;-)

The skirt is done, I'll see DGD Sunday and start altering
the blouse pattern.

Pics soon....

Sounds like a great plan, and that is close. ;) Sometimes you can't get
any closer than that. I understand.

For instance... My best girlfriend from college is getting married this
summer. Her fiance was born in India. (he's just a wonderful and adorable
man. I couldn't be more happy about this wedding!!!) So they decided to
combine all of the elements that were important to both of them in the
wedding ceremony. A little of this a little of that. I'm going to be her
matron of honor. (actually all 4 of us have duties.) For the wedding, she
got me a sari (on a recent trip to India with him and his mother.) And she
just bought the matching fabric to make the choli top.

She told me to make whatever I would like for the top and sent me links to
sites that sell cholis. So.... I'm using
http://www.simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=6945 because it's close
too. ;) I'm doing short sleeves. Because I have this pattern and have
done it once, I know I will have to shorten it between the shoulder and the
bust line. (I almost always have to shorten there.) I am going to put the
CF on a fold, or just trace and redo the front so it's one piece. I'll
have to shorten the body of the blouse also since the hem needs to hit at
or above my natural waist. (I think at.) Then I'm going to put an upside
down zipper at the side seam.

See? I understand "close." ;)

Sharon

PS. She told me she got me the sari because that is 6 1/2 meters of silk.
And after the wedding it can either stay a sari, or it can become whatever
I would like to do with that much silk. She & I know and understand each
other very well.

Oh, I like that pattern! I have a sleeve pattern from
several years ago I could have used with 6945, but it isn't
available in a size 4. I'm afraid DGD is too small for an
adult size 8. I haven't used any New Look yet, do you like
them?

Your wedding outfit sound fabulous!

I really do like the New Look patterns. I have to fiddle with them the least
of any of the major pattern companies. The alteration that I have to do on
blouses is just because I'm so short through my torso. The other thing I
like is that the patterns come in 8-18 all on one pattern usually. They
also seem to be really standard. If I need a 10 in one pattern, I need a
10 in almost all the patterns. They also do a lot of patterns that are
whole outfits or wardrobes. Too, Wal-Mart carries them. So not only do
you get a good bargain on the pattern (with so many pieces and sizes
usually) the discounted price makes it even more reasonable. I think they
are about $3 (last time I paid attention) at WM. And they tend to keep
pace on trends more so than some of the other pattern companies. NAYY. :)

Thank you. I can't wait to see it. I've seen pictures but it isn't here
yet. She is going to mail it to me. When it gets here, I will play with it
and see if I can wrap it myself. I'll post pictures when I can.
