Help ! I am making a mat (quilt) to place on the floor for a baby to
sit on. I am using a single panel front & back and thick wading in
between. Can anyone give me advice on the best may to stitch it
together - I've made a few in the past and I can never make them
without the material bunching? Previously I hand baste the materials
together before machine sewing the edges but perhaps my technique
wasn't right. Is machine basting the answer?
Help!

Baste it together in regular intervals...whether you use pins, hand
basting or spray basting doesn't matter. Then quilt it. Use something
simple like a basic grid pattern across the whole thing.

Now, to finish the edges, are you going to bind them or are you sewing
this thing together in such a way that you can birth it (stack wadding,
back panel face up then top panel face down, sew around edges and turn
inside out)? If you are doing the birthing method, do that first and
then do the quilting. If you are adding binding afterwards, do the
quilting first.

I hope I explained all of that well enough. I am sure that others will
have more tips that I may have forgotten - so keep watching this space
for more information!

Don't bind the edges until you're done quilting it. Baste or pin the
"sandwich" first. To quilt, start in the middle and work out toward the
sides. When you're done, trim the sides even, then put your binding on.
