Can someone help me decide between the Bernina 830 and Pfaff 1222. My
wife and I are trying to narrow down our choices for our daughter's
17th birthday present, and it seems from our research that either of
these machines will be more than adequate-- sewing clothes, some denim,
leather, probably not a lot of embroidery or quilting (yet).

Let your daughter choose. They are similar in specs but very different
in 'feel'. I like the stitch quality of the Pfaff, but can never use
one without becoming annoyed! The controls are all in exactly the wrong
place for my fingers. The Bernina I can use comfortably. My Husqvarna
feels like it was specially designed and tailor made for me.

Would be very hard to "choose" since neither machine is currently in
production, and would be very rare each model was at the same
store/dealer.
Personally prefer the Pfaff 1200 series for their powerful 80 watt
motors and of course the walking foot/dual feed. IIRC the Bernina does
have a walking foot/dual feed,but it is a separate attachment. Pfaff's
IDT system makes sewing every thing from slippery silks to quilting very
easy. Prints and patterns almost always match up with little problems as
the upper and lower fabric are kept in sync.
As I haven't used a Bernina 830, can only say the stitch quality on my
Pfaff 1209 is excellent, and it sews "straight" without any problems.
Once one has the correct upper and lower tension are set, the rest is a
piece of cake. Some have reported problems with buttonholes on certain
Pfaff 1200 models, as I've not done anything with button holes, cannot
speak about this either.
In case you haven't noticed yet, there are several flavours of the Pfaff
1200 series. If you have time go over to the Yahoo "Pfaff" group and do
some research. You'll find a wealth of posts, including some copies of
manuals.
Both the Pfaff and Bernina are work horse/mechanical machines that
should give good service. Manhattan Sewing is a Bernina dealer, when you
ring them up as if he has an 830 in for service that you could at least
look at, maybe taking your DD along (and the Corgi). Pfaff 1200 series
machines from what I have heard have more room under the throat than
Bernina 830's. This will come in handy for doing large and or bulky
sewing.

The line of mechanical Husqvarnas--the entry-level Prelude, the Romeo, Lena,
Sew Easy, Daisy, etc.--are so simply and beautifully designed that they
should win design awards. Everything is placed where it ought to be. The
controls are self-explanatory (though I'm compulsive/meticulous about
reading the manual). I've sewn things with it that would be very tough to
push a needle through by hand and it just keeps on going. My other machine,
the Singer 401 is also an example of good engineering and simplicity of use
but I can sew things on the Husqvarna that cause the 401 to slip out of
gear.
There is so much dialogue about this choice between the Bernina and the
Pfaff because they seem to be about equal in quality. An easy choice would
be between some inferior machine (I don't dare name one) and either of these
two. I favour the Pfaff because I find it's closer to the way I would
design a machine for myself than the Bernina; but neither one would be a
disappointment.
