What is the best marking pencil out there to use on a variety of
fabrics? I'm so frustrated with my current purchases, they never
write smoothly, and the points always break.

Please help!

For very dark fabrics, I like a nail-whitener pencil:

because it can be sharpened, and make a very fine line.

I also have several colors of tailor's chalk, and some
"disappearing markers", plus a chalk wheel, with different
colors.

There is ah huge selection of marking instruments here:

A lot of the time I just use an ordinary fine propelling pencil with an
HB lead. Fine enough not to show too much, and many marks get trimmed
off anyway...

When I do need something else, it depends on the fabric. Chalk is fine
for rough fabrics, and I use qu8ilt marking fabrics for other things. I
even use a biro on things like vinyl and coated fabrics!

There's a package of water soluable marking pencils in red, blue and white
that I believe I bought from Clotilde. They look like regular pencils in
that they have wood casings, but they are larger. They write like a colored
pencil, but they wash out as well. These are the best I have found. I also
quilt and found myself always running out of ink with the ink pens. These
pencils obviously don't have that problem. One word of warning, though,
don't press with an iron on the mark or you may set it.
