I need to make a big mens fall/winter jacket (size 6x) (his present
one is falling apart from use). I cannot find a pattern for this, and
I am looking at the not so thrilling task of converting a long sleeve
shirt pattern..

I want to make the jacket out of fleece (western washington costal
winters are generally not too bitterly cold), but I have been totally
unimpressed by the material I have seen here locally.. (too thin, and
WAY too stretchy, without a proper "return" [memory])

Any constructive thoughts on this task? (pattern drafting software is
not acceptable)

Have you looked at Malden Mills Polartec fleece? I recently
received the order I placed at denverfabrics.com (big
discounts while they close out all stock).
http://www.denverfabrics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=001&Category_Code=FLE
The 200 wt is actually a little heavier than I would have
liked (I'm in PDX), but it's fabulous stuff. The shipping
is a little slow ATM, as the web site is changing hands.

"6X" doesn't really tell me what size you need (especially
if that's RTW sizing), do you have a chest measurement? The
Green Pepper jacket at Butterick:
http://www.butterick.com/item/GPF858.htm?tab=green_pepper&page=2
goes up to size 2XX (pattern sizing, not ready-to-wear) and
the chest measurement is up to 52". That might be a good
starting point, even if you have to do some alteration to
the pattern for size.

Green Pepper also has a web site:
http://www.thegreenpepper.com/adults.html

This one:
http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M5538.htm?tab=unisex_men_uniforms&page=1
goes up to 3XXX, which lists a 56" chest size.

If you decide to alter a shirt pattern, be sure you add
wearing ease, as a shirt is expected to fit closer to the
body than an outerwear jacket.

6X is in fact the standard pattern sizing, not necessarily RTW...
Those patterns would be too small, and would need to have extensive
alterations..

I used to be able to buy a few 6x patterns, but the large pattern
houses have all slowly dropped them over the past years.. (and
unfortunately, my box of big men's patterns got lost/destroyed)

The only one that I know of that currently comes close is the dratted
Simplicity 4975 <shirt pattern>, which goes up to big mens 5X..

His actual measurements are:

Chest 66", Waist 73", Apron 75", Sleeve 36" (of course you have to add
ease to those measurements)..

With big men's patterns, you really need to look at the waist
measurement, not at the chest, as the waist to chest ratio tends to be
incorrect (slopers copied & enlarged tend to be for a "V" body shape,
when big men tend to be an "A" body shape), and they tend to be far
too small in the waist. He also has the apron, which adds to the
fitting problems.

I will check the malden mills fleece.. Thank you for the suggestions.

Burned that pattern long ago.

This is the one you want:

No, for B2104, you want to choose by chest measurement. And he'd be
a perfect Connie 6X. Just swap right and left plackets and raise CF
neckline 1/2" for a guy. Though many big guys don't have enough room
to raise the neckline and keep a band collar.

Depending on the fabric chosen, you may not need to add ease to
convert from woven shirt to jacket -- something like Powerstretch
does not need extra ease.

Kay (who just finished a man's jacket drafted from a knit shirt drafted
off the woven shirt that originated with B2104)

Okay Beverly, it is all YOUR fault...

I just went to the denver fabrics webstore, and shopped till I
dropped. So I will now have to buy yet another plastic storage bin to
store this latest stash increase... (I will have to hide this stash
away for certain - Oh my! I promised no more stash increases... LOL)

I hope that the fabrics are good quality..

I got the last available yardage of some of my varied fabric
selections. I bought 5 yards of that 200 wt polar fleece to make
the new winter jacket for himself (Among other things... LOL)..

me (who had a Dr. appointment today in "the city" and still somehow
managed to get 2 more shirts cut out today, and completed one other
shirt, which is now hanging in the closet, ready to wear.. YAY!)
