I took my 1130 to my trusty Bernina guy to get a tuneup. I've been keeping
it in tip top shape for almost 20 years now (bought it in 1987). Alas, it
needs a part that he can't get. I now have to find a part for it or see if
one of the local places will honor my 20-year mechanical warranty even if I
don't find the receipt. In the meantime, I'm Bernina-less! Ouch. I did
pick up Janome 4000 to do buttonholes (thanks to all who helped with that
decision), and am learning how to use it for other things, but it's not the
same. Oh woe is me. :)
Tomorrow, I do some fancy footwork trying to either find the part or see if
they'll honor the warranty. Jeepers, who knew being Bernina-less was this
stressful?

I feel bad for you, Donna and I really hope you will be able to find the
part somewhere. I don't know how the weather is where you are, but I can't
do any footwork(walking outside) here in Houston after 10 a.m. till dusk,
just too hot. I believe in that ad that says let the fingers do the
walking, while I have a cool drink and talk on the phone.

I've never heard of this happening before with such a young Bernina, let
alone one still in warranty. They should know by the serial number of
the machine whether it is still in warranty. The 1030s were
manufactured between 1987 and 1992 so it would seem that your 1130 has
to be under 20 years old. What about the dealer you bought it from? If
that dealer is no longer in business or if you moved away, you should be
able to take it to another registered Bernina dealer or mechanic and get
it fixed. Call Bernina USA in Aurora, Illinois (630-978-2500) and talk
to their customer service. What they can do is contact the Bernina
dealer closest to you to authorize them to fix it. But you will still
have to pay for the labor.
The power board in my 20+ year old 931 blew out recently (the only thing
that ever went wrong with it). And while my machine was no longer in
warranty (and I had to pay), they sent the board to Illinois where it
was repaired. I do know that a few years back that the Bernina
warehouse in Switzerland had a terrible flood and they lost many parts.
But you should still be able to get your machine fixed even if they have
to make you a new part or rebuild one. Go to Yahoo Groups....
<http://groups.yahoo.com/>
If you don't have an account, you'll need to make one. They are free.
Join the "BerninaThirtySomethings" group and post about your problem.
You'll get lots of help there. These folks really know Berninas! They
also have informational files and manuals in the "files" section. And
there are at least a couple of registered Bernina techs that post there
regularly. There are other Bernina groups on Yahoo as well. And there
is another general sewing machine repair group called WeFixit. If you
need any other help, feel free to email me (just take the "nospam" out
of my address.

I was completely stressed out when my 931 went in for repair so I know
how you feel. Make sure they hook you up with a dealer that has a tech
that knows the older machines. Mine only knew the newer machines and
only worked part time so it took forever for me to get my machine back.
She had to get help with everything and it turned into a real ordeal.
In fact, they finally had to send my whole machine to Illinois because
she could not get the needle up/down stop working again. I hope you can
avoid that kind of trouble. And if you are thinking about getting a new
one, be sure to let the dealer know such a purchase would be contingent
on how well they fix the 1130. Good luck and please post the outcome as
I'm very curious.

Get in touch with the Bernina group on Yahoo. I have gotten parts for
my 530 from them.
