Hello,

Can anyone recommend a good book on altering women's clothing? I
really need instructions for shortening jacket sleeves (lined) from
the armsyce. It has sleeve hem details that will not allow it to be
shortened there and needs to be shorten by 3 inches. My "Google"
search only nets one book, "Altering Women's Ready to Wear" by Mary
Roehr. I'm not familiar with her work. Is this a good source?
Thanks for your help.

You might check THreads online and see if the article they wrote on the
subject a few years back is online, or else see if you can find the
issue that discussed it to buy it from them.

Thanks for suggesting back issues of Threads. I never think about
them! So far I haven't found what I was looking for with the sleeves
but while searching I found an article on how to "read" fabric
wrinkles. The article is in issue #102 from 2002. I know I have that
copy around somewhere; I just have to find it. Thanks again.

Mary Roehr's book is excellent, and as far as I know, it's the only one
of its kind. Several people have talked about writing books on
alterations, but I've not seen any of them ever published.

You might also look at Leah Crain's site, which has articles on
altering: www.leanna.com
