Ok, the daughter is going to be a bridesmaid this June when she will be 7
and a half months pg. Here is the website with a pic of the dress:

Boy am I in trouble.

I have 2 choices.

1st choice. They will get me the fabric that matches the dress and I can
sew up something that comes close. I went and looked at patterns and boy,
not a lot of maternity patterns out there, and nothing in formal wear.

2nd choice. They get a much larger size dress and I alter it to fit her
size. Ummmmm, what size do we get?

I sure could use some advice.
Thanks
Ginny

My DD was also in a wedding when she was as far along as your DD.
She's also about 5'10" and a BIG girl -- about a sz. 22. I had DD order
the largest size dress made (a 20, I think) and 2 yds of the dress
fabric. Fortunately for me, the gown had an empire waist with a six
panel skirt. It was also strapless but came with a shawl that all the
girls wore. I used the purchased fabric to make new, larger side back
panels for the bodice and added two additional skirt side panels and
narrow straps. When I reattached the skirt to the bodice, I gently
gathered it to fit the bodice and give her enough room for her tummy.
The bodice of the dress your DD will wear looks like it has front
and back boning, gathers across the midriff and is fitted down to the
waist. I'm not sure what you could with that type of design to
accommodate her tummy. How much extra fabric you will need to alter the
purchased gown will depend on what can actually be done. If you get a
larger size and then try to make it smaller, you'll really have your
work cut out for you if there's boning in the bodice front! I'd almost
prefer to just get the fabric and make a whole new gown.
If you decide to just make something yourself, all you need to do is
find a pattern that has a similar neckline and skirt treatment. Any
strapless empire waisted pattern would work as long as the bodice fits
your DD. Just make the skirt bigger around to accommodate your DD's
pregger tummy. OH -- cutting the skirt front panel on the bias helps it
to drape across the tummy but takes a bazillion yards of fabric and the
bridal shops charge *really* high prices for yardage! Once it's made up
in the same fabric, people won't really notice that it's not exactly the
same as the other bride's maids and it will still look OK in the photos.
You couldn't even tell that my DD's gown had more pieces than the
other girls.
I couldn't get the "close up" feature of the gown site to work so I
can't make any good recommendation on how you could alter the dress and
make it bigger to fit your DD's tummy. The bodice back could probably
stay the same but I'm just not sure how you could change the bodice
front. It's so difficult to know how big your DD will be -- how close
to the wedding do you think you could do the alterations if she buys the
ready made gown? I did the alterations to DD's gown about 6 weeks
before the wedding then had to take the silly thing in the day before
the wedding because DD didn't get as big as we thought she would!
I have done a LOT of alterations to both bridal and bride's maid
gowns. It's really a lot of what I call "fiddly" work getting the whole
thing disassembled, altered and the put back together! Good luck and
let us know what you finally decide to do, OK? CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Third choice: go back to the bride and have her go through the trouble of
picking out an appropriate maternity style for your DD. Or what ever other
trouble has to be gone through for her friend to be her bridesmaid.

Excellent idea! Ball's back in her court. I think, if she wants to follow
the - in my eyes - slightly absurd custom of dressing all her bridesmaids in
uniforms (which those all-the-same-colour-dresses are) it's her
responsibilty to provide these uniforms in appropriate sizes. The pregnant
daughter will have enough to do with her own changing body and the changing
interior of her place without worrying about a dress for such an occasion.
And I think that she'll be glad if her mom has time to help her with that
instead of fussing over the aforesaid dress. Just my two cents... ;-)

But invaluable wise words.
