I have one of these fashionable tiered skirts but the zip broke (so
badly that my husband had to cut me out of it!) My question is, are
there better zips for this type of skirt, where the zip extends through
the horizontal tier seams? It seems that the effort of forcing the zip
through the bump of the seam is the problem.

Thanks,
Fey

Can you remove the zip, stitch the seam shut, and replace the top with
an elastic waist? Maybe unsew the top tier off the skirt, or perhaps
cut it down so it becomes the waistband.

Most of that type of skirt tends to have too wide of a top tier, IMHO.
They look better with flare over the hips, rather than going straight
down to the next tier.

Karen, I can't do what you suggested; the skirt has a wiastband with a
yoke and the second level is gathered onto that. I too think the ones
that are gathered from the waistband are too wide (making one's hips
look significantly wider than they might be) and bought one with a more
tapered top. What's more it's lined as well.
I'm thinking dusters at this point :(

Oooh, I know. Unsew top tier. Discard lining (petticoats are more
practical). Finish new top tier with elastic (pull-on) and if you want
to to use up the former upper tier/yoke, make it into patch pockets.
Then, at the F-store, pick up a yard of a suitable 45" fabric. Cut into
9" lengths, sew into one huge cylinder, gather to former finished hem
of skirt. Et voila!

I would sew a fly to the back, face the front if necessary,
and sew on snaps.

Actually, I'd open both side seams, put in broadfall
pockets, and do without both zippers and snaps. I can't
stand to be without my pockets!
