No kidding! We paid $250 for a new sewing machine a few years back that
turned out to be a Chinese sailing ship (a.k.a junk). Quoth the raven....

That is exactly right. Most low-end sewing machines these days are
either VERY light-duty machines (only a few models catering to a
vertical market) or practically made to be disposable.

There are some models of sewing machines from some "manufacturers" that
are only sold through big box stores, or on-line vendors. Many (most?)
of these machines are far inferior to models of the same makes that are
sold through independent dealers. They are basically throw-away machines
because when their plastic parts stretch or break, there's no way to
make adjustments and replacement parts are not available. Some of those
machines are very light. That's because they have no frame: the top and
bottom shafts, etc., are screwed to the plastic shell.
