My husband has inherited the Breton fishing cap from my late father. It is
a wool cap in and looks like this
http://brittanyboutique.com/store/yeucap.html. It's a bit too big for my
husband but he really wants to wear it. Any ideas how I can adjust it
without it looking too obvious? I don't really want to take the whole thing
apart if that is avoidable. I was wondering if I could add some padding or
a band inside or similar.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Dear Viviane,

This is a costuming solution. When I was doing costume for our
university theatre, we put a band of elastic on the inside of the
cap. Our hats, you see, had to fit several different actors. Just
make sure you don't get it too tight and give DH a headache. Measure
to his head measure with just a tiny bit of stretch; use one-inch or
1-1/4-inch wide elastic, and stretch and sew it to the headband
inside. It won't show, and will keep the hat in place.

To that good advice, I would add: it's probably best to add
the elastic to the back half of the band only, as otherwise
the wearer will have to deal with elastic over his
(presumably bare) forehead. Depending upon how much slack
needs to be taken up, OP should be able to draw the headband
in sufficiently by placing the elastic on the back half or
two-thirds.

and sew them over the Ears part !!!!
