This group (alt.sewing) is wonderful. Now, however, I need a comparable
cooking group. When I google for recipes I can get plenty of new recipes,
but I need the advice and extra hints that come in this group, not to
mention the moral support which can be so helpful.

Is there such a place? Please tell me about it.

Meanwhile, very painful arthritis is preventing me from sewing, but I follow
your sewing ventures and adventures and enjoy them vicariously.

Please help if you know of any such group.

Thanks.

Well, there's rec.food.cooking, but if you think this group is nasty, as
some apparently do, you will hate rec.food.cooking. They tend to be
food snobs.

If you are just doing regular cooking, the freezer cooking list I was on
was really nice -- http://groups.yahoo.com/group/friendly-freezer -- but
they generally discourage general cooking questions.

So I went to look at it -- at least ten times as active as this group,
but seems to be mostly civil conversation, with a minimum of off-topic
digressions. As on any very active group, there are a few people you
need to killfile, and a few people daft enough to encourage them by
responding to their posts.

I didn't notice any advertisements -- but then I didn't open any posts
with all-caps subject lines -- so they must be as "nasty" as this
group about defending their right to have a conversation.

There are a number of gourmet cooking snobs there that you have to
ignore, and they get nastier than I have ever seen anybody here get.

other than Sheldon, SW, Peter A & Joe Spare Bedroom (who has
other issues besides food snobbery), who on rfc gets nasty?
i'd agree it's going through a more chat than recipes phase
right now, but if you request advice, you'll get it.
Sheldon can be a disgusting jerk, but he does know cooking...
