Go for it! We live in Australia and have used Skype for years to keep in
touch with family and friends in England. My parents there see more of
their granddaughter in Australia through Skype than they do of their local
grandchildren. It means they can see and hear music performances, see
certificates from school etc. Makes all the difference. You don't need an
expensive webcam.

We also have a Skype phone which means we can make and receive Skype calls
without having to have the computer on. We can use this for making Skype
out phone calls - where you pay to ring another phone rather than ringing
computer to computer. This was very useful when my dad was dying in
hospital as the cost of calls to England was a fraction of what the phone
companies here charge.

We always get a good laugh when the local phone companies ring and tell us
they can get us a great deal for overseas calls. When we ask if they can
give to us for free with a video they realise they are wasting their time!

Go for it! We have a camera and Skype - my DD talks to her Nanna &
Grandpa reasonably reguarly on Skype and loves it - it means we can keep
in closer touch than just phone & visits 6 or so times a year (we live
about 5 hours away). It is quite easy to use I find - and I'm not the
hotest PC user in town....

I've also used Skype to see my friends in far flung places now that I've
moved - very useful.

Thank you, everyone, for all the encouragement. Now, I need to know
exactly what to buy and what to download, then how to operate it all.
The camera I currently have is b/w. If they are available, I am
perfectly willing (nay, eager) to invest in a color one, as it will be
used for talking to the faraway grandbabies.

Have you got a Best Buy close? Go talk to the geek guys there. At least
the ones at our local BB are pretty sharp and know their stuff. They could
at least tell you what you will need to look for, etc. (you don't have to
buy there if you don't want to.) Also, you need to find out if your
computer has enough oomph to support one. It does take a fair amount of
memory to run the video on both ends (you can see yourself and the
babies!!) That's something else the best buy guys could tell you about.
Then you could check the specs on your computer yourself.

Another good place to get good deals on computer accessories/parts and other
electronic goodies is www.tigerdirect.com. That's where DH usually buys
all the computer stuff from. NAYY. They ship very quickly and we've never
had any problems with anything we've gotten from them.

My brother set up a skype account for my folks so they could talk that way.
Both my parents LOVE it, and neither are really "into" the computer that
much. lol I'd love to do it here too. DH says we need to upgrade first
tho. He says we don't have enough processing speed. :( Oh well. After
some needed car maintenance and a few other things around the house, a new
computer (built by DH) for us'uns is in the plan. And skype or something
similar is Definitely on my wish list.

The Best Buy around here has done away with the Geek Guys, as of 3 weeks
ago. The closest BB is about an hour away, so I haven't been back since
then to see if they changed their minds.
