Hi,
Local store has one NOS for sale.(~$200.00)
Same place has used Viking 6440 with all the original stuff
came with when new. Servied by the store since hew(~175.00)
Wife needs a machine for general home use, no fancy work.
Any opinion on either one please?
TIA

I don't know anything about the Elna but I do know the old Vikings are
very good machines. What sort of a warranty are they going to give you
on the machines? Has your wife tried them out yet? I would try them both
and then decide which one I liked best. Be sure your wife takes her own
thread and fabric to test the machines, maybe two or three different
fabrics.

Well, my mother has an Elna (don't ask me for numbers) from the 1960s; I
think she got that one for her wedding. They're Swiss made, I think, and the
one in question has been in use for normal and heavy duty household sewing
since 1966 or so. (I think my mom made a tent on it once, and those were the
days when tents were made from heavy cotton fabric). I'm not sure if she's
100% satisfied with this machine, but that may have something to do with the
fact that she'd never RTFM. Whenever I used it it worked fine, and if it
didn't I'd just adjust thread tension and apply some oil and all was well.
About Vikings I don't know. Hope that helps.

There are a to main problems with the Viking 6000 series that I am
aware of. One is, if it hasn't been used in a while there's a good
chance it's got 'stuck in reverse' syndrome from a gummed up
buttonhole/reverse mechanism. This is a time consuming to fix, but it
can be done. The other is the cam stacks are plastic and prone to
cracking; you'll need to remove the covers to inspect - the are no
longer made by Viking.

That said...if the machine works and is in good condition they are the
most wonderful stitchers, and powerful too because it has the
reduction-gear feature. I swear my 6570 might sew through wood :)
