Ok this is bugging me, as cannot find the source of the problem.
My vintage Elna Supermatic flatbed sews just grand, but suddenly the
light will not come on. Tried several new bulbs, including one from
another Elna Supermatic that works just fine, and nothing. Thinking
back, when I first got the machine, the light would fade and brighten
sometimes as the motor raced.
Hate to send my machine off to the repair man at the moment, as have
several projects going. Does this sound like a "home repair", or will it
simply have to go the "doctors"?
TIA

Sounds like a loose wire in the light fitting. Unplug and have a look.
If there is a loose wire, it shouldn't be hard to fix. It may need
soldering.

Now repeat after me - "I must turn the power off first *before* looking
at the wiring".
I wouldn't want any of my sewing friends electrocuting themselves whist
fiddling with the wiring of their SM's!
Now I'm an electrical engineer, yet I've still electrocuted myself a
couple of times (though not on a SM) - you'd think I'd know better.
Let me tell you, it HURTS! AND IT CAN KILL YOU! So be careful, and
remember there are some electrical components (capacitors) that can hold
a charge (power) *after* the electricity is turned off and give you a
shock when you touch them.

I'm pretty sure that's what Kate meant when she wrote: "Unplug
and have a look..." But in the case of electricity, better two
warnings than none. ;-)

Ho yuss! UNPLUG BEFORE poking about inside your machine! Don't just
switch it off - unplug the wretched thing as well! :)
