Hi there, I will be travelling to Rome, Siena, Florence and Venice in
April and wanted to ask for fabric store suggestions. I searched the
group posts for this topic and found one from 1997 but wanted to re-
ask for any updates or additional info. I am not looking for any
specific fabrics, as long as I can walk in without being a business
owner. :-D Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Have a great
day!

I have never seen a fabric shop in Italy - even in provincial
up-to-date towns. I don't think sewing and sewing machines are on
many Italians' agenda.

I seem to remember seeing a pure silk fabric shop in Florence way back
in 1990. It was for tourists really I remember, not for a sewer!

There must be fabric stores in Italy. We went to a cleaning store, and
while we were waiting our turn, I got a chance to notice the clothing
brought in. All of it was hand sewn. Beautiful suits with linings all
couture made. The most beautiful tailoring. Someone must be buying the
fabric somewhere.

We met the owner of a silk factory at a Rotary Club and went to his
place of business and bought some silk. This was in Como.

Laura - I have a grandson living and working in Italy as a
professional Latin dancer. He has to get his costumes made by
professional people in either Bologna, Milan or Rome who have access
to a range of suitable materials. He said there are no home
dressmakers that he knows of. We visited him last year in the
provincial town where he lives (and works/trains) and where there is a
large dance studio. No fabric shops there - nor did I see one in
neighbouring Bologna - and we did a lot of shopping there.

Arlene - I think the silk factory is just that and don't they produce
some wonderful silk? This company would probably supply garment
makers rather than have a fabric shop anywhere. But I may be wrong.

Hi -
I'm so jealous - I am ready to go back to Italy. It was almost two years ago
that we went. Here is a long thread on a travel site re:fabric stores in
Rome, Florence, Tuscany in general.
