if you are riding hunt seat or dressage, it can be wool and lined,
but if you are riding western--such as showing in hand in showmanship
or in tack in western pleasure, horsemanship, or reining, etc...there
is a whole host of what is considered in and correct right now. wool
not being one of them.

AQHA shows. And no, I won't line it, or make of wool. I show in the
summer and it can get quite hot! I'm not going to the "World" show,
so something cooler is in order.

I like stretch twill. Lots of colors here as well as a
couple of prints:
http://www.fashionfabricsclub.com/search/search.aspx?source=searchbox&keywords=stretch+twill
http://www.denverfabrics.com/search/search.aspx?source=searchbox&keywords=stretch+twill
For a jacket, I would tend towards "bottom weight" fabric.
It may go without saying, but for an unlined jacket be sure
you finish the raw edges, either serge, Hong Kong finish, or
zig-zag.

Beverly:
Well, gosh darn it, denver fabrics has every color except black,
which is what I want! A gazillion navies, but no black. It must be
the wrong time of year for black. Interestingly, the fashion fabric
club had the identical web page as denver fabrics...are they one and
the same company?
Thanks for your help...if you know of any others, I would appreciate
hearing from you.

I think they merged a few years back. I ordered from
denverfabrics.com for DD's wedding (2004), shortly after
that they had a big sale to clear out stock, and as I recall
the reason was that there was going to be new ownership.

Fabric Depot (local to me, NAYY) has black stretch twill:
http://www.fabricdepot.com/index.php?page=ProductPage&pageid=2576
The Mill End Store is also local to me. They don't have an
online catalog, but their staff is very knowledgeable and
I'm sure they could help you if you give them a call:
http://millendstore.com/index.html
This eBay seller has some:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Black-Stretch-Chino-Twill-Fabric_W0QQitemZ370144213041QQcmdZViewItem
and:
http://www.manhattanfabrics.com/catalogue.cgi?ddisplay=3680
http://www.manhattanfabrics.com/catalogue.cgi?ddisplay=2896
and:
http://www.safedenim.com/p-14-41246-stretch-denim-115oz-2x1-twill-98-cotton-2-spandex.aspx
This says black, but I would sure want a swatch, it appears
dark blue on my monitor:
