I use the Eternal September.org news service. It is free and little spam
gets through their filters.

Thanks Ron, I may have to try this. I have Forte Agent but think their
newsreader is difficult to send messages with (or I just haven't spent
enough time learning).

I'm not sure why you think Agent is hard to send messages with. In
the toolbar at the top there is a tab called Action. Click on it, and
you will get options for New Usenet Post, New Email Message, Reply to
Usenet Post, Reply to Email Message, Reply to Poster via Email. Click
on the one you want. Viola! a message box. Type your message, then
click on the winged arrow in the upper left. (NB: I've been using
Agent since it was Free Agent .99, so I'm fairly familiar with it.
However, it's very like the web interfaces I've occasionally used over
the years. I have never used LookOut!)
If your trouble is setting it up to send things through your ISP, look
under Tools. Options and Servers and Accounts have all the settings
you need to talk to your ISP.
I have kill files set on domains, and have told Agent not to pick up
Usenet messages over 500 lines in length. With that, I get maybe two
or three pieces of spam in my newsgroups, and that's using an
unfiltered newserver.
