Hi everyone...
I googled for help in altering a jacket that is a snug 44 with only a
little left to let out. My tailor didn't want to make the effort to
let the jacket out for me. I was hoping that if I paid to have the
jacket mailed to someone willing to let it out, someone could give me
as much width as the jacket would allow. I can feel about an inch and
a half to 2 inches of extra fabric along the back and that is all that
needs to be done. Any takers...this is easier than me shopping this
around to other tailors in the neighborhood since I have two little
kids who love to play when I get home from work :-)

To be quite honest I wouldn't touch this project with a ten-foot pole.
If your local professional "doesn't want to make the effort" I sort of
suspect that it's more a matter of you not being willing to pay for the
time and aggravation involved in such an undertaking. And maybe I'm
feeling just a little tetchy this morning but I find it vaguely
insulting that you would consider asking a group of total strangers to
be the cheap and easy solution.

To be fair, I don't think he is looking for a cheap solution. The tailor
didn't want to do the job. He is just looking for A solution.
I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole either because it doesn't sound
possible. You cannot let out 1 inch in the back of the jacket without
adjusting the collar, otherwise you will get a hump. Then there is the
lining... It is probably not cost effective.
But I don't think we need to jump on the guy for trying to save his jacket.
Just my 2 cents

You can check local dry cleaners to see if they have someone who does
alterations and would be able to have access to your physical person for
fittings. They would be used to doing alterations, whereas a tailor
might really only want to do creating garments from scratch.
If you want to avoid driving around, just call the dry cleaners and ask
if they have someone who does alterations.
Sending something for alterations to a person who doesn't have access to
your physically for fittings is a recipe for an easy disaster. How is
the alterationist to know whether they are letting the jacket out in the
right places?
Don't be surprised if it costs you a bit to have it done. My neighbor
is an alterationist and custom seamstress (mainly alterations) for a few
local dry cleaners, and she charges $20 just to re-hem a pair of slacks,
which is a pretty easy process. But she won't take a job without being
able to mark the alterations to be made while the garment is on the
person it is to be altered for.

Dear Pete,
That 1-1/2 inches you feel in the back is ease so that you can move in
the jacket--it has to be there. Two solutions. Swap it with a
friend, or give up sweets for a year. Sorry.
