The backstory might have helped everyone here understand the
situation a little better. "We" are often asked about the
"cost to alter", or the "possibility of altering" various
RTW garments. A quick search on the Google groups archive
would have led you to several recent threads on this
subject, for instance:
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.sewing/browse_frm/thread/644dfca92119c2a0/72ba61a3c5a5db9a?lnk=st&q=jacket+alteration+group%3Aalt.sewing&rnum=3&hl=en#72ba61a3c5a5db9a
That in no way excuses anyone who was rude to you, but
please understand, you're not the first (nor will you likely
be the last) person to ask a similar question. Very often,
folks have watched "What Not To Wear" or some other silly TV
show where the hosts haven't a clue about sewing, and have
the mistaken idea that alterations are "simple" and "cheap."
That's just *not true*. So if "[Your] tailor, who does
great work, said that it wasn't worth the effort to make the
alteration..." you can probably take that advice to the
bank. Sorry,
