I've been a little busy recently. And my suppliers have NOT been the
most helpful on God's little blue and green planet...

Henry Bertrand sent me samples with the wrong labels on, so some of the
colours were wrongly named, which caused considerable confusion. They
also sent me samples for at least one colour they no longer do - which
was seriously helpful (NOT!) as it was a perfect No 4 colour for our
cascade of 5 purples... And then one of the other colours was out of
stock and they are not due to get it back in again as it's a winter
colour! Ngngngngngng... GR!! ARGH!! It took forever to find colours
to slot in from alternative suppliers and put the whole project in
jeopardy at one point, and has delayed it by about three weeks! Luckily
our original finish date was a month ahead of when we needed it. Frock
should be done by the end of next week! The fitting has been a bit of a
marathon, as my lady was wanting to shed a little weight, and she's had
breast surgery both sides, and a back injury many years ago left her
with one leg shorter than the other! Ah, and thread... We also had a
high old time matching thread to the fabrics! I managed that at last
with the help of Kleins in London. One day I must make a pilgrimage to
their shop! They are so nice to deal with! And I ordered the thread on
Monday via the website, and it got here on Tuesday! :D

The bride project has been a little slower than anticipated, in part
because I was ill a couple of times and had to cancel or postpone
fittings, and so did the bride because work has lumbered her in a major
fashion! But I made the final fit adjustment today and marked the hem,
so once that is done, there's only the sash to play with! PHEW! She
loves it, and is bringing her lovely mum for the final fitting next
week. Lovely mum sent me a jar of her home made orange & ginger
marmalade today! :) Hehe! Alan said: Why don't MY customers send me
presents? I told him I was nice to *my* customers! And no, he isn't
nasty to his, they are just horrible customers! :D :D

The Miss Havisham project has also been delayed and therefore scrunched
into a three week period because of dilatory suppliers! More Grr Argh!
I sent for samples from McCulloch and Wallace in London, and TWICE
they got them wrong! And another place also let me down twice, so we
have to alter our ideas a bit on that! Also, the darling customer (she
is, really! Mad as a bag of ferrets, but lovely too!) changed her mind
the other day about style: no crinoline - we're going for more of a
Regency look than mid Victorian. Today she changed her mind on colour!
No longer dove grey, but ecru! Good job I had the bride to see this
morning, so I hadn't ordered her silk or dyed the cotton lawn and
Broidery Anglaise yet! So now, rather than grey dye, I have two packs
of beige and a pack of cream, hoping that this will give us a shade more
positive than the cream but not so dark as full on beige! There's a 10m
bit of 60" wide very fine Egyptian cotton lawn (of a fineness you can't
usually buy these days! Feels nicer than Liberty's Tana lawn!), and odd
2m bit I had in the loft already, and a couple of 10m lengths of the
lace. I shall pop the lace in a net baggy so it doesn't snargle up
round the fabric and make a rats nest of the lot! I'm not worried about
it coming out beautifully even: some 'faded' bits would add to the mad
look of the finished project. I've also got some artificial roses to
play with! Going to try to paint them a bit, and distress them, so they
look like they have faded from pink to old parchment and been dragged
round on her dress for 30 years! I found a box of
cream/ecru/coffee/brown 'silk' rose petals that I can also scatter
about, and 4 1000m cops of YLI cotton thread I can use in the serger!
Yee Haw! Thank God for Hobbycraft!

Then there's the hot air balloons! Yup - now there are to be two! One
small one, about 18" or so tall, and one about half as large again.
Originally to be blue on top and bottom, with a white stripe with the
company logo round the middle... The smaller one will still be like
this, but the larger one will be blue on top and gold at the bottom! So
in addition to the experiments with dye, I'm experimenting with gold
acrylic paint on rip-stop parachute nylon! They are to be done by
tomorrow evening, so they can go off to San Diego at the end of next
week! Now I have to say that the supplier of the parachute nylon we are
using was superb! I rang up on Monday and the stuff was here Tuesday
lunchtime! :D I sent a check on Tuesday morning, so that should be OK.
But I'm now on the hunt for tiny baskets to hang under them!
Hehehehehe... It never ends! I've just gained a day's grace on this
project as I had to tell the customer I can't get back to Hobycraft
until Saturday. If only I'd known before, I could have looked while I
was there!

In the middle (or muddle?) of all this at ten thirty this morning, I
fielded the traditional call from a stray loony:

Her: How much does it cost to have a prom dress made?
Me: That depends on the amount of work and the style. Anything between
£200 and £2000! When do you need it?
Her: Next week!
Me: Bwahahahahaha! No way! By CHRISTMAS, possibly, but not by next week!
Her: Oh...
Me (thinks): Dozy mare!

And some time before the 21st of this month I want to make ME a frock
for my silver wedding party! All I can say is thank God the new pills
are working! Yay for Arthrotec! The fibro is at last in retreat!
Well, for the moment... Simmered back down to a background grumble for now.

Thanks, Pat in Arkansas, I found a couple circular skirt patterns, to use
for DGD's skirts. I really appreciate the prompt response.

Having read all of this post, I can only say that you now also carry the
title of MIstress of Understatement!!

I am impressed and bewildered....so much going on with so many changes
and disagreeable suppliers....I think i would be spitting nails right now.

I haven't a hope of competing with you for multitasking, but who does?
<grin>.

Sorry I haven't been around lately, but th ings have gone a bit wonky
around here. Niece (notice the lack of the "dear") has been here since
June 10th and it has been a trial nearly every day. I can't honestly
fault her for most of the crap, as her parents have allowed her to run
without rules and discipline for nearly 14 years. However, I CAN (and
do) hold her accountable when she goes out of her way to violate OUR
house rules. Really, there was only 1 - respect...for us, our children,
herself, and the house (meaning no wanton destruciton). She has fought
us every single day on this...walking away when we are talking to her,
smirking with a brain-dead look on her face, YELLING at MY children as
if she was their parent, walking into a room with a closed door without
knocking, leaving the toilet seat up, following DH and me wherever we
go, giving attitude when she is asked to do things around the
house....I'm tired of it and glad that her parents are coming up to get
her at the end of the month.

I'm afraid that THEY will be in for a rude awakening because, even
though she is their daughter, OUR rules still apply in our house. I'm
just hoping that they aren't bringing *everyone* when they come up (mom,
dad, son, mother of mom and father of dad) because we don;'t have the
space to put all of them!!

The worst part is that MY children see what Niece thinks she can get
away with and they are starting to copy her!! That's going to take a
while to break them of that habit, but it better happen before they go
back to school!!

So....no sewing going on, though I did finish a messenger tote bag and
got a lovely knit shirt cut out and pinned.....can't get to the sewing
machines because of the mending that needs to get done and the fact that
she has her stuff spread out on one of the tables <sigh>

Larisa, wondering just WHY I thought this was a good idea

Hi Larisa,

I went through similar issues with my own DD at that sort of age and
eventually DH &I decided that enough was enough and she went to live
with her father. After a year of (in)different parenting she took things
into her own hands and finished her last year of school while living
with her BF and his parents. She worked hard, retook some earlier
modules, sat her exams and got good grades. Now at 19 she has just
finished the first year at university reading Biology & Genetics. She
put herself through stuff she didn't need to, but has come out of it a
better, stronger and nicer person.

What you have done with/for DN will stay with her - now she knows there
is a different way to live. Later on (this year, next year, sometime)
it will sort itself out in her head and she will have better inner
resources to call on, even if she doesn't realise you put some of them
there.

Keep your head above water, and keep your cool. Give the kids a hug
from me and remember that DN must be worth working on - or you wouldn't
have come up with the idea!

Hugs

Lizzy

I second this! As much as a pain as her behaviour is now, it is a cry
for HELP. Just being around people who are consistent in their rules
and who insist that she treat herself (as well as those around her)
with respect is giving her a very positive experience.

RANT ON: I honestly don't understand why so many people seem to think
that kids raise themselves. Or maybe they just don't think! I grew-up
in a household with 2 adults who were MUCH more interested in boozing
and getting high than they were in raising kids. I remember
alternating between rage (that life in that household was so horrible)
and despair (that no adult even *tried* to intervene).
RANT OFF

It bears saying again: God bless you Larisa for trying to help your
neice! I'm sure it means way more to her than you realize.

KRAMAR!!! (hugs) all around!

Erin
