I use a medical syrange for applying the grease. It works great.

Great !

Things don't always read the way people say or think them on the
forums .

You had said something like, "grandmother gave it to me but
doesn't know it yet"

that did not read well, i gave the benefit of doubt with a
question but i forgot the "?"

Older White's brand sewing machine are considered great machines
i do not know much about the newer ones.

They also made machines that were re-branded for places like
Sears Robuck etc. so if you if you can not find a manual for a
844 try looking at sears model 84 or something like that (confirm
with picture of machine all knobs in same place and shape etc)

here is a good site to read about history of various machines
including White and sometimes they have free manuals or parts of
manuals that you can download

Hey Mike,

Since internet searches are actually fun for me, I did a little hunting
and found 1 place (hey, it took less than 2 minutes) that you could
order a manual from. Here's the link (you'll need to scroll down):

Just in case no one has suggested it yet (I'm reading on a poor feed
at the moment), there's a yahoo group called "wefixit", made of amateur
and pro sewing machine mechanics. Poke around in the files for basic
procedures; ask specific questions (including "does someone have
XYZ part or know where I can find one?)
