FWIW
I agree with Kate and Joanne and some others takes on this.
You heard two different things you wanted some clarification. Are
the magazine people not capable of making a mistake ?
And the reply sounded catty to me as well and telling... as if
winning a prize should be all that mattered to you.
I would only be tempted to respond that i was perfectly capable
of selecting a deserving charity to send the prize to.

Oh no I'm keeping the prize, I deserve it.
I replied the following to her mail.........
"No I am not disappointed. I was simply confused, as I was absolutely
sure of what I had heard you say.
I did feel that by emailing a second time I was going to be annoying and
it seems I have been. My apologies for asking so many questions and
taking up your time."

Oh I'm glad it wasn't me that read it catty. I did wonder if she wrote
it while miffed. I asked the question very nicely I thought.
I wrote ........
"I hope you don't mind me email a reply to this a second time but I have
a problem.
I was told at the NEC by the editor that I had been given 2nd place in
my category, I am absolutly sure that is what I was told as the words
you have come Second and you have joint Third place sound entirly
different, I have been turning this over in my mind to make sure of what
I heard. Now this email is saying something different, and please could
you clarify your position and explain the anomoly. I have been telling
everyone I know that I came second and now feel rather odd telling them
otherwise."

Oooh hoo... I'm miffed on your behalf. I think it unlikely that you
misunderstood or misheard. I think *she* screwed up and the least she
could have done was apologize graciously for the confusion she caused.
This situation and her response says a lot more about *her* than it does
about you.
Tell her, in writing, that you want to claim your prize and that you
prefer to decide for yourself what to do with it.

I think it says a lot too but I am still chuffed to be placed . I was
thrilled to be finalised.
However the organaisation on the day smacked of "couldn't organise a bun
fight in a paper bag" as my father would say( he's a retitred baker).
Didn't stop me having a great time tho'
