I have a favorite older sheet set for which I cannot get a
replacement "part". The bottom fitted sheet doesn't fit my
new mattress which is extra thick and upon which I recently
added a 3" latex foam mattress topper. (Arthritis in my hips
makes sleep rare and hard to come by, I'll do almost
anything!) The bottom sheet is never properly "on" the
mattress in the morning.

Long story short, I decided to make an attempt at altering
the sheet:

Bought 2.5 yards of 45" cotton in a very close color match
(dark green), tore it lengthwise into 4 equal strips, joined
the ends in French seams, and narrow hemmed one side.
Removed the elastic from the sheet, sewed the strip to the
edges, the serged the seam edge. Sewed in new elastic all
around, using a three-step-zig-zag. I just put it on the
bed, and I like the result, the sheet now covers the entire
mattress, with a goodly amount to tuck under as well, and
will not slip off (I think/hope).

But gads! It took way too long for me to consider doing it
on a couple of other sheet sets. I guess I'll look for new
bottom sheets in the deeper size, fortunately one set is
white-on-white.

Beverly, who can't quite break the old "fix it-or do without
it" ethos....

If you have the time and liked your results, I say go for it.
Especially if you have some matching material in your stash. Nothing
as satisfying as "I did it, and it works!" Maybe if you do it again
it won't be as time consuming as your first successful attempt.

Well, I *do* like the result, the sheet stayed in place
perfectly last night. I do have some excess white cotton in
the stash, so maybe I'll do it again for the white set.
However, the burgundy? Nothing in the stash that color. :-(

I've had some luck adding elastic to fitted sheets. I go across the
corner so that when it's in place, there's a diagonal band underneath
the mattress. Perhaps 6" long and making an equilateral triangle with
the existing corners.

Try safety-pinning it, see if it will save some sewing and
modification work.

I have done that in the past when the sheet is just a smidge
short of covering the mattress. This was just too mach
gaposis, rather like the teen girls with bulgey midriffs
showing between pants and top. :-|
