It might be faster (if the original elastic is ok) just to cut and insert
a band of new fabric on the sides of the sheet -- think stripe all the way
around the sides of the mattress.

Or if they aren't favorite sheets, just use the ones in your closet to
commit muslins. <g>

I have great sympathy for your situation Beverly but after too primary
cancers, I have decided that life is too short for some things and
especially bedding issues.

A few years ago, I decided that my sheets were a mess and I needed to
upgrade. I thought about it long and hard given that they all needed doing.

I loved the memory of childhood sheets - good thick, heavy duty cotton. I
loved to crawl into a bed newly made with these smelling of sunshine and
fresh from the clothes line. Of course all these childhood sheets were
plain white. Given the mismatched duvet covers and fitted sheets and top
sheets and pillowcases etc, that lurked in the linen cupboard, I decided
that I would move to white for all fitted sheets, pillowcases and top sheets
and just buy duvet covers as a single item. The beds look better, I can
grab any fitted sheet or top sheet from the appropriate pile
(single/double/queen) and putting the washing away is also easier.

None of the old sheets or pillowslips have been wasted. I use the sheets on
dog's beds or back seats of cars and I use the pillow cases fro storing
things like ham legs at Christmas or for totein all sorts of things when we
go camping.

The most I've done with older sheets is to cut off the elastic and do a
small hem so they look better on the dog's beds.
