HI everyone--

I'm usually fairly quiet, but read everyone's posts....and i'm in a
befuddlement.

I work in a traditionally male industry. I meet with clients, and i'm
typically on a job (read construction) site or in a factory setting.
(no, i'm not a sales person, i'm a safety consultant).

I usually wear chinos and polo style shirts, or other knit tops. all
very conservative. I'm also a chunk <g>.

I rec'd a call from my boss today, and part of the conversation was
that a disgruntled client (who didn't like the message i was
delivering) did not like the way i was dressed...and the vice
president has pounced on that, saying i need to dress more
businesslike.

I'm really not wanting to spend a fortune on jackets...my thought is
that if i could make a few jackets in neutral colors, i could fairly
well mix and match. I'm a quilter, and have limited experience sewing
clothing...so, i need something fairly easy.

any opinion on these Simplicity patterns?

3870, 4375 or 5311 (view E).

thank you very much--

Would he say the same to a male colleague dressed as you usually dress?
DO your male colleagues dress as you do, or do they wear suits or
slacks, shirts with ties, and sports jackets? If they dress in business
clothing, then the boss has a fair point and so should you... If not,
you have a case for sex discrimination!

3870: nice, but leave off the breast pockets, especially if you are chunky!

4375: a little too casual for business use...

5311: Very smart! If you have a short neck or double chin, go for this
collarless style.

kate--

the men wished they dressed as well as i do. a couple of them look
like they roll out of bed in the clothes they slept in.

having said this, it's in my interests to keep this job (office from
home...really only meeting clients two-three times a week.)

thanks for the input. i agree wholeheartedly with your choices. now,
let's hope i can put them together!

They'd never get away with it here.

Betsy,
Just to put things in perspective, why don't you run these comments by the
vice-president that told you to upscale your attire. Let him give you the
final word. After all, he does have a say in your future.

Just my two cents,
AK in PA
