I wear knit shirts (all-cotton or all-polyester or a blend). Although
I wash, dry and iron the shirts according to the instructions on the
label, the dark-colored (i.e., navy, black, red, etc) shirts fade after
only a few wearings.
What fabric is the most colorfast?
Should I wash, dry or iron the shirts differently from the
label-instructions?

can't help with polyester as i don't allow it in the house ;)
the cotton, especially dark colors & red, should be washed in
cold water *inside out*. i usually dry inside out too, but
then you get lint lines at the shoulders... easy enough to get
off with a tape roller, but annoying.
higher priced knits hold up better than cheap ones.

If your skin can take it, use a powder or liquid formulated for coloured
clothing.

Try not putting them in the dryer. I have found that the color in
dark knits ALWAYS fades in the dryer....hang to dry or lay flat....

I make my own t shirts as bought ones never fit and I always buy cotton and
never have a problem with colour fastness, I use 40 degree wash and Ariel,
but we cannot use the new liquid tablets they irritate us and irritated my
son so he passed them on and they irritated his friend so if you have
sensitive skin which we don't be wary. Buy the best quality you can, but I
know that is not always available in the size and design you want.
