I am looking for a "new" machine. I have a brother 1120 that my mom gave
me it is about 5 years old maybe even older it was her machine. I have
had problems with it just not having the guts to go through several layers
of denim or other heavy coverall material. I also have problems with it
filling hte bobbins and tying itself in knots It doesn't tension itself
very well and it tends to jump around. Needless to say it is driving me
buggy I know it wasn't an expensive machine and I know it was serviced
pretty recently and it has the same issues. So I am wanting something
that hopefully will work better.

I am on a limited budget so I know I cannot afford a new machine I have
been looking at older used machines. I have two that I would like to go
and try out they are a viking 6440 and a Pfaff 362 Are these good
machines? what should I look at with them? I primarily patch and hem
denim I also do some sewing making things for my daughter and would like
to be able to sew stretchy knits as well as denim with one machine.

thank you
Mary

You sent the same post twice and there was no need, really.
I have never seen a Pfaff or a Viking that were not good machines;
but I don't know anything about the two you mentioned.

Why not look at the machine's websites and read about them, then take
a pair of coveralls or a similar fabric to where the machines are located
and try them out, if they are being sold locally?

Someone else may have experience with them and post later, but in the
meantime, google the Pfaff and Viking websites and read about them.

Hi Mary, you said the Brother won't sew through the heavy fabric. I was
just wondering if you were using the correct size needle. Also, are you
using a knit needle when you sew knits. And do you use a stretch or a zig
zag stitch. I love my Pfaff sewing machine, but I don't know anything
about the 362. HTH

rgypsyrose had written this in response to
http://www.sewgirls.com/sewing/Looking-for-advice-42500-.htm :

I am sorry about having two posts, I didn't mean to just didn't think the
first posted due to an error message. Thank you for the replies. I have
a denim needle that I use for the machine when I sew the heavy materials.
The machine stops, I think it would burn up if I kept trying to force it.
I hand turn to get through, so I was wanting a tougher machine. This one
has been serviced a number of times, the last time the guy was just like
don't bring it back it's not designed for what you are trying to do. I
plan on taking samles to sew, but the machines are from private parties,
so I wanted to know if there are certain things to look for that would
mean major repair or unfixable.

Mary

Keep in mind both those machines are no longer supported by the
manufacturers. Parts are limited to common items.
You would probably do best working with a local sewing machine shop. That
way you can get the help you will need after the sale.
