I just bought some lycra fabric on Ebay and I think it is machine
washable, but I want to make sure before I preshrink it. Can someone
advise me?

It depends upon what other fibers are in the fabric. Lycra is
probably less than 10% of the fiber content. What else is there?

Wool? I wouldn't put it in the dryer, but you can probably prewash it
on cold/gentle.

Cotton or polyester or rayon? Wash warm, tumble dry low-med, don't
dry it all the way.

Acetate? treat it like a wool/lycra blend.

Don't over dry the fabric, don't wash with bleach, don't wash in hot
water.

100% poly won't shrink. If it's a cotton lycra blend, you might get a
little bit of shrinkage, but not much. If it's swimsuit fabric, you can
still wash it (you wash swimsuits) just go easy on the detergent. Best to
always treat the fabric the way you intend to treat the finished garment.
Unless it's a fancy lycra with sequins or something, you should be just fine
machine washing it.

I find that the steam iron shrinks lycra during the sewing process
more often than any type pre-wash. Now, I know that it is rare that
you have to use an iron in sewing with lycras....but for some reason I
always find myslef smoothing the ease of a lining or something with my
iron and then....it shrinks! The fabric maintains all it's other
normal qualities, ie. sheen, lustre, elasticity.
