Hi all,
My old faithful Singer (Touch and Sew) mechanical workhorse just
went into the shop and the repair bill (broken timing belt)...will be
$169.95!
Should I get it repaired or buy a new machine?
(I can't believe I am even asking that question because my machine was
a graduation gift from my parents and it's such a good friend with so
many fond memories....I actually feel guilty considering not fixing
it)
What do you recommend? If I get a new machine...any suggestions (and
what price range are they in?)
The lady at the repair shop said I could get the basic Bernina
(mechanical) for $30 more than my repair.
What about a 1008?
Thanks for any advice.

You should do what feels right to you. Bottom Line. No other advice
needed.
Although, personally I would probably buy a new one, but if you fix the old
one it will last longer than any new one. I can't give advice about what
kind of machine to buy but can say that you should test them out first.

Don't count on the repair lasting longer than a new machine. I spent over
$150
to get new plastic gears and the old rubber feed dogs replaced with metal on
my MIL's Touch & Sew so I could do some mending for her. She later gave
me the machine. The new plastic gears lasted less that 15 years.

Hi Irene and Kate.......
My husband has had my machine totally apart and knows where the
timing belt goes (Engineer)....but he doesn't know how to adjust the
tension - set it. Have either of you replaced a timing belt? I
suppose he could give it a go....but....
The lady at the shop said that it is extremely difficult and tricky to
do.
Also, I don't think it was the Bernina 1008 that was that
cheap....probably some other very entry level machine. We were just
investigating our options. Even on e-bay the 1008 sells for between
$5-600.
I do have another option in front of me that I should consider.....my
Grandmothers old Singer 401A. She sewed slip covers (mostly) for
extra money to put my Mom and her brother through college.
I fiddled with it a bit and don't know how to wind the bobbin....AND I
can't seem to get the zig-zag stitch as wide as my old machine. I
suppose I should see if I can find some manual or something on the
internet to figure it out.
So....really, my HUGE concern is that I still have a HUGE sewing
project that I have to get costumes for 32 dancers to perform at the
Detroit Pistons game in a couple weeks!
