Hello -

Is there an easy way to put an umbrella hole in a tablecloth?
Would I just cut a circle and iron seam binding around it to prevent
fraying? This is a polyester cloth.

I don't think I want to put a zipper in (that's a bit beyond me!)

Thanks in advance for any help!

Mike

If it were me I would sew bias binding tape around the hole to hide the cut edge
but if you are looking at a no-sew option consider the following:

1. Iron a circle of fusible interfacing (larger than the hole you will be
cutting out) to the underside of the tablecloth making sure it is centred on the
table cloth.

2. Cut out the hole for the umbrella.

The fusible interface should prevent the raw edge from fraying and will leave
you with a clean edge. Just make sure you get the correct type of interfacing
and you don't end up gluing it to the bottom of the iron instead of to the
fabric ;-) .

Easiest (non-sewing) way would be to find some bonding tape
as large as the desired hole and apply it to the wrong side
following manufacturer's directions, and then simply cut the
hole. Something like the denim patches they make for jeans
would probably work, it could even be a "decorative element"
on the right side. Like:
http://www.joann.com/joann/search/search_results.jsp?CATID=cat1002&keywords=denim+patch&_requestid=919534

However, if you do sew: locate the center of the cloth, mark
a circle just slightly larger than the pole diameter on the
*wrong* side, cut a circle from scrap fabric of similar
color about two or three inches *larger* than the previous
circle, pin-baste the scrap wrong-sides-together centered on
the soon-to-be-hole, sew around the smaller circle, slash
every half-inch from the center *just* to the stitching
through both layers, turn the scrap to the wrong side, press
and either hand tack or machine stitch the edges of the
facing down. I have a couple of clothes I have done this
with, they have lasted through repeated washing and use.

Iron-on seam binding and I have never gotten on. I'd proabably cut a
"facing" of a slightly lighter weight polyester and sew that on.

Or I'd use a strip of bias fabric... you can hand sew it fairly easily
if you don't have a sewing machine handy.

Let me know if you need directions on drafting and sewing a facing.
That's maybe a bit more work than a bias binding, but not very difficult.
