I was shopping for a pair of maternity jeans on Saturday. Couldn't
find a pair in my size at Sears, and that was the only store we had
time to shop that day. There are new types of maternity clothes out,
the "panel free" where the pants just fit below the belly and the belly
hangs out, and then there are the ones that have what I call a "low cut
surround" type panel...also not very appealing.

I looked at my husband when we got home, as I was frustrated and
depressed over not finding anything that my slowly evolving belly would
be comfortable in, and said, "I should just hack up a pair of my old
jeans and put in my own full panel! He, being the PITA he is, looked
up and said "That's a great idea honey...why don't you do that?"

Has anyone ever altered their old non-maternity clothes into maternity
clothes? Any hints, tips, books, websites or other information that
would be helpful? I'm going to try some more stores today, but if I
don't find anything, I might have to alter my own. Be warned, I'm not
much for sewing clothes - I'd rather do quilts or crafts, so I'm not
real up on some of the terminology. I do have a serger and a regular
sewing machine.

TIA!

they sell something on the notions wall that is a maternity panel insert
that you can put into any pair of pants. Keep in mind your hips will get
wider and you need to allow for that.

IMHO, that would work for the first, maybe second trimester, but as
your hips re-align later in the pregnancy, you'll need additional
width all around, not just for your belly. I was very slim, and
although my babes were carried mostly out front, my overall hip
measurement increased toward the end. You'll probably be able to wear
altered pants for a while, but need full-blown maternity pants later.
If you have pants you never want to wear again in your "normal" size,
go for it.

YES!!! DID that when I was pregnant with DS. I took a pair of my
Dockers (work pants at the time) and inserted a maternity panel. Think
I hacked up a pair of jeans as well, but can't remember. It wasn't that
difficult to do, and I actually still have maternity panels in my sewing
box if you want me to send them over to you <grin>.

If I remember correctly, the panels have directions with them to walk
you through it, but basically, it is putting the panel where the zipper was.

However.....having said that, I tried to put the Dockers on after having
DS, and they were too tight....had to cut the panel a bit to get them on.

Larisa, dredging up memories from 5 years ago...a painful, not too
pleasant experience

Did you find the rectangle shaped panels or the U shaped ones?
