Hi All,

I am (finally!) getting round to doing a few little bits of sewing here
& there, now that DS is bigger and weaning I have a (teensy) bit more
time to myself!

We're travelling to Europe (from the UK) by train soon, and the little
chap will be in his pushchair for a lot of the journey. I was just
thinking that I ought to add some sort of padding and / or lining to it
to make it more comfortable for a long journey.

Our pushchair looks like this :-

I was thinking about buying a couple of old towels from a charity
(goodwill) shop, and sandwiching them with some polyester batting,
possibly a double layer for the seat and a single layer for the back. I
was also thinking if I got time of adding some velcro so I could add on
a neck pillow / head support for when he sleeps. But I'm not sure these
are the best fabrics / padding to use.

I need it to be washable, dry easily, and above all, the liner must be
small enough & slim enough to be folded up within the pushchair and not
prevent it closing and fastening up in the storage position. The little
chap weighs in at an arm quivering 1.5+ stone at 8.5 months old!

Any suggestions as to alternative fabrics? Or paddings?

TIA,

Sarah

Towelling tends to be a bit hard when sat on for a while. I'd use
something like cotton flannelette or just cotton - patchwork cottons
work well. A couple of layers of 2ox poly batting in the seat and back
would do well, and at that age they don'r need a pillw as such, though a
separate neck support pillow might be good if the seat doesn't recline.
Shpuld be easily washed and tumble dryed, especially if you wash and
tumble the cottons first. And quilty fabrics come in such superb prints!

Wow... It's so long since James was that size (at that age, too! 98th
percentile all the way through, my cherub!). He had a very sturdy
Silver Cross buggy that was well padded, so I never needed to do
anything like this. Bomb-proof almost! Built like a tank, anyway. I
don't think it would have folded up as small as yours. I knew we were
going to use it a LOT as I don't drive, so we bought a good one. Pure
extravigance, but the blessed thing complete with infant sized car seat,
rain cover, sun shade, and foot cozy thingy came to just under £500 in
1994! Thank God for doting grandparents! :D

Good to see you posting again. :) How are the cherubs? Mine is nearly
15 and almost 6 feet tall! (And NOT a skinny build!) Yikes!

Kate,

Many thanks for your thoughts. I shall have a rummage through the stash
and see what I can find that's soft. It's quite funny, DS has a fabric /
furry thing fetish - he loves towels, burp clothes, will wrap himself
around ankles and feel / chew trousers legs, and pounces on slippers
with great glee! He also chews door wedges.....

I didn't mean pillow, more of a 'n' shape to go around the head so he
doesn't get a crick in his neck - the pushchair does recline.

DS is alternating between the 50th & 70th percentiles, and is relatively
tall, although I've not measured him to work out where he is on the
height percentiles. He'll be 9 mths old in a few days time - where did
it all go?

DD ran at about 45th percentile on weight from 0 to 1, her height is now
spot on 50th percentile, her weight somewhere between 40 to 50th
percentile, she is quite tiny compared to some of her class mates though.

Oh, I've not been away - I read this group most nights ;-) it's the one
thing I _make_ time for. Just not seen much recently that I wanted to
post about, or done that much sewing for that matter. I've done odd bits
here and there - a bit of mending, a set of black out curtain linings
for a friend, made a dressing up costume skirt for DD etc..

I've seen your photos of the GMNT and laughed to myself over your
nickname for him - I can remember when my brother went mad for the Ninja
turtles!

The kids are great, although it has at times been very stressful time,
it's slowly getting better, and I'm looking forward to going back to
work. Trying to combine breastfeeding DS (time consuming) who has
definite views about where he will (2 places in the house, very rarely
when out) and won't (lots of places!) breastfeed, with my desire to do
lots of fun stuff with DD (impatient toddler who is having the terrible
three's,and attention seeking by copying DS...) has been difficult. DS
has finally started to sleep better (although he is now cutting his
first tooth) and I am slowly regaining a life of my own.
