My second overlocker

Can anyone help me with a question about a Bernina Bernette 334DS. I got it at an estate sale about three years ago. It came with a lot of accessories. I used it while making costumes for the Bremerton Community Theatre rendition of Sound of Music. Now it is not working correctly. A friend of mine and I have tried to set the red and blue loopers unsuccessfully. My sister did a long distance diagnosis and seems to think a tensioner wire is broken or missing. Is it worth repair or should I just drag it behind the car till it disappears and find myself a new maching. I can get a little Husky for 299 clearance right now. It is just a back up machine so I can run two different color threads at the same time.

If you don't have a manual, you can maybe get one online. I'll suggest you take it to the dealer, too, for a check-up, maybe it just needs cleaning and adjusting.

I have an older Bernette 234-MO (bought used, when I really didn't think I needed a serger), I actually like it better than my new Huskylock 936 for some things. You don't describe how it is "not working correctly", so it's pretty hard to help.

The first thing to try is *new* needle(s). Be sure they are inserted correctly.

The second thing is to re-thread *from scratch*, both loopers and the needle(s).

The third thing I would check is whether one (or both) of the blades has been damaged.

???My Bernette has tension disks. I have taken them apart and thoroughly cleaned them when I seem to be having tension problems, but one has to be very careful re-assembling them.

I have no opinion on that model, I can't find anything about it online. If it's a $200 special I would leave it at the store....

I have three sergers for much the same reason. ;-)

As you have messed with the loopers I would suggest you bring it to a trained technician and have it repaired.

------------------------------------- Thanks for all the comments. In reply to last, I have not "messed with the loopers". I have discovered it costs $169 to take the machine for diagnosis not counting parts. On E-bay one in working order, one goes for $50.00. As much as I would like to keep the machine, there is no guarantee that it is repairable and you pay the fee regardless. I am going to try to donate to a women's shelter or Good Will if they will take it. Going to buy a little Husky serger I saw on clearance for $299. Makes me sad but the economics of it speaks loudly.
