Yesterday I made my long awaited trip to the NYC Garment District
Had to put it off for a couple of days because it rained hard on
Tuesday and Wednesday was far too windy for me.
I feel like I'm writing a report here on "What I did on my Vacation."
I had a great time, saw more fabric that I thought ever existed and came
home very tired. I didn't get to go to half the places I wanted to.
After going into at least 30 stores, between 39th and 40th street I had
to throw in the towel. It was exhausting for me. I started at 7th Ave on
each street and never reached 8th Ave on either one. That's because there
were stores I wanted to go to on both streets and I could find my self
lagging.
Most of the stores just have rolls and rolls of fabric in a very small
place, standing in the isles, up to the ceiling and very little space to
move. Few are organized in any kind of system that I could detect. The
store keepers knew where things were. Don't ask me how they knew, they
just did.
As I went from store to store each presented a different feel. I knew
from the start that I wanted knits in either cotton or rayon. I was
looking for something to make the wrap dress I like from Hot Patterns.
Some place said out right they didn't carry knits. One place showed me a
big hole mesh, not exactly what i would make something from. A lot had
wild prints, not my style. A couple of stores tried to palm off
polyester. I hate polyester, makes me itch. Some stores really made an
effort, i others they ignored me. For the most part there's know way to
know whats on the roll. You have to depend on the store keeper. Some
had prices marked along with fabric content, most were not.
I finally found a lovely cotton jersey with a little bit of Lycra in a
maroon. Now I have to find something nice to use as a contrast. By the
time I found what I liked I couldn't shop a minute longer.I still had to
get back to Grand Central Station.
Next time I go down to shop I'll forgo lunch on the lower East Side. It
took up too much time and wore me down a little faster than I wanted.
Lunch was worth it though. The store Russ and Daughters is a NYC
Landmark and I really wanted to go there. They don't have any seating,
but DH and I found a sidewalk bench, around the corner, on Orchard
Street. We sat in the sun and enjoyed bagel, cream cheese and lox. One
of my favorites. They have so many things to choose from that it was
hard to decided. The carry, smoked fish, all kinds of caviar, flavored
cream cheeses, dried fruits and great looking chocolates. Too much to
choose from. The store was very busy and I didn't want to hold other
people up.
I told DH we have to make a trip down, just to the Lower East Side to
visit some of the historic areas down there. My next restaurant down
there will be to Katz's for Pastrami.Katz's is the restaurant that was
the big scene in "When Harry met Sally." The one where Meg Ryan shows
how woman can fake it during sex.
Back to the garment district stores. I saw so many beautiful fabrics, I
really wish I had more things in mind to buy. This way though I know
more of what's there and can go down with a BIG list

It sounds like it was a most enjoyable day, although very tiring, and you
did find one fabric. You'll enjoy remembering the day, when you're sewing.

It was a great day Emily. I'm just not used to that kind of shopping. I
usually walk in a store with a list and pick up what I need and go
home.I'm not much for a "Hunt" but this one was fun.
