I'm hoping someone can help me understand sizing for children. I'm
wanting to make a sleeper for my 2 year old grandson...it's for a
Halloween costume. I have found a pattern I like and it says for
Toddlers and Children. Is a 2 year old considered a toddler? When I
look at the measurements, it only gives finished garment measurements.
There is no table showing what the child's measurements should be for a
given finished size. For instance, finished garment measurement for
chestline is 30" for smallest size; my grandson's chestline measurement
is 21". Each increase in finished size is shown at 1".
I have been trying to get hold of the pattern mfg but our calls back
and forth keep missing.

I would expect age 2 to be classed as "toddler" - if it is, it will be
sized to leave room for a nappy. 9" ease sounds a heck of a lot, but
there's no way of knowing without seeing the style. What measurements do
they give for height and hips?

he sounds skinny like my oldest. 6 years old with a 22" chest. I think the
patterns are based on average kids. I know how you feel though. you could
always bring in the sides.

Cheryl,
Yes, a two year old is considered a toddler. I think they leave lots
of room in the costumes for clothes to be worn underneath. Around here,
it would not be uncommon to need a down jacket under a Halloween costume.
A bit of a warning. Children's patterns are notoriously ill sized.
The first costume I made for my daughter when she was 8 months old had
to have four inches cut off the sleeves. The rest of it wasn't too far
off in size. It just had gorilla arms. Don't know why.
I've also found that children's patterns are often very boxy. That
would account for the 30" inch chest. I'm not sure why pattern makers
do this. I've found the best made patterns for children are those by
Kwik Sew. Their sizes make sense and the resulting clothes aren't twice
as wide as the child. Kwik Sew 2711 looks like something that might
help you. The XXS is size 3 which wouldn't be too bad a fit for a 2
year old.
Remember, Halloween costumes for children are forgiving. They don't
have to fit perfectly. Good luck with your project.

Dear Cheryl,

RTW "toddler" sizes are for children still wearing diapers. Since this
is for a costume, try looking at costume patterns, which have lots of
built-in ease for not only diapers underneath, but also clothing. The
basic shape is very like sleepers. And you can make this basic shape
into whatever costume you have in mind--you don't have to use the extra
trappings.
