Searching for something else last week, I came upon this
http://www.cedesign.com/familyphotos/sewing/collar/index.html
and couldn't wait to try it. Just so happened, a piece of cotton batik
for a shirt was near the top of my current stack. Here's a photo with
the stand attached, before insertion of the collar:

and one after the collar was stitched in:

I do believe this method makes it easier to join the stand smoothly at
the front edge, and will be doing it this way again. My stand pattern
is very narrow, so next time I'm going to redraft it and the collar a
little wider. I think just 1/4 inch extra wiggle room will help in
shaping the curve, without noticeably altering the finished appearance
of the shirt.
My topstitching is a little erratic...one of our dogs got snakebit this
morning and is on IVs at the vet's. I'm a little shaky, waiting to hear
that he's going to make it, and wanted to keep busy, but prolly should
have sewn on a less conspicuous area.

Dear Doreen,
I didn't understand thedrawings at all, but your pix did the trick.
My way is easy, too, but I always like to know more than one way to do
something. I'll try this the next time I make a shirt.
A typical stand is 1-1/4 inches wide.

Teri,
Aha. Right now the stand is just under an inch. It's from a wornout
ready-to-wear camp shirt I cut up for a pattern years ago. So 1-1/4
inches, when I modify it, should be just about right.

Hope your dog comes through this ok. Why do they do that? Snakes and
skunks. Sheesh.

Funny you should say that. One of our other three got skunked on
Tuesday! After a bath with the peroxide/baking soda/liquid soap
mixture, she's just about tolerable. Or we've gotten used to the fragrance.
Our vet, bless him, cut his lunch hour short to meet DH and Casey (DDog)
at the office earlier today. He called about a half hour ago (after 6
p.m. our time) to tell us that Casey is doing well and resting fairly
comfortably under mild sedation. He expects Casey to recover. :)
