What on earth is a sloper?

> What on earth is a sloper?
A basic pattern with no seam allowances, and with straight-sided darts
extending to the high point of the part being shaped. Often made of
oaktag or other light cardboard, with the darts cut out for easy
tracing.
Loosely, any pattern used only or primarily for designing patterns.

I only skimmed these articles, but I don't think either mentioned that
if you make a bust dart bigger, you will almost certainly have to
lower it. But it's easy to see whether this is necessary, and easy to
see how to do it.
I don't recall seeing people in RTW with the darts two inches above
the breast lately; maybe designers have caught on. On the other hand,
I don't recall seeing *darts* lately! Shirts way too tight around the
hips, so that they ride up in wrinkles, are almost standard -- no
matter how slender the RTW wearer is.
(RTW: Ready To Wear. Also known as "off the rack".)
