My partner has trouble finding trousers to fit him correctly, and as
we're a little tight at the moment with money I was planning to make
him a pair...
...but....
....can I find a pattern? No! I was looking for something casual,
combat/army style (the sort that were recently 'in fashion' until jeans
became the next big thing AGAIN), but I can only seem to find patterns
for trousers that my grandpa would wear, and little luck for finding a
female equivilent that I could alter.
Any help would be much appreciated! I've searched the group but only
seem to come up with fitting and alterations for existing
trousers/those who have a pattern.

Try http://www.sewingpatterns.com/index-kwiksew.html
I glanced through there and saw a couple you might be able to use. One is a
'convertible' pair (looks like zip-offs) but you wouldn't have to do the
zipper
thing.

Burda 2713 purchased last November (2005) - Cargo pants for men -
haven't made up anything other than test shorts for my DB, but they went
together well and fitted him fine.
Only problem is - I don't think Burda carry this one anymore!
Sorry - not much help!

I don't know what "combat/army style" might be, but:
Simplicity 5581 might work, they're kinda cargo pants, just lengthen
the pattern to full length and add extra yardage.

Vogue 7094 is also cargo-style pants:
