I'm a newbie to sewing with a machine. I recently purchased a Singer
5050 model and I like to sew heavy duty bags using pillow ticking
material and nylon upholstery thread. I've been doing this by hand in
the past but now want to use the machine. The instruction manual
doesn't make mention of nylon thread. Will this work okay in the
machine?
Thanks,
Jim

Hmm.... You may be OK. What you are going to want to do is test on
scraps. Remember that you are going to need a heavy needle for this. Large
eye as upholstery thread is thicker than normal "dual duty" thread. Try a
Singer "jeans" needle. Also, you want to see if it's too heavy for the
bobbin. It may be. In that case, you could try using poly thread, like
Mettler.

Go slowly. You will know quickly if it is going to work or not.

The thread may be to thick for the machine.

I've done backpacks and other heavy stuff with ordinary 100% polyester
thread - holds just fine. I only use the good stuff like Gutermann or
Mettzler (sp?). No need for anything heavier.

You probably do not need that heavy a thread.... I use pillow ticking
a lot when making pillows or as backing to utility quilts, and use
ordinary construction thread. A sharp Schmetz needle in a 14 or 16
size should work just fine. I would stay away from Singer needles.
Some fabric stores have a bit heavier polyester thread by Gutterman or
Mettler---top stitching thread used with top stitching needles will
give a heavier 'look' if that is what your after. I make deer and
moose hide bags and use ordinary poly threads for them---so far no
thread failure in several years of doing this.
