Put my lunch dishes in the DW, getting ready to go
downstairs and start sewing. See a big puddle in the middle
of the kitchen floor. SCOLD the (usually beloved) dog! BAD
DOG! Shoo him outside. Discover the puddle is waaaaay
bigger than a little 11 pound dog should produce. Open the
dishwasher. EEEK! It failed to completely drain after the
last load, and water is leaking out the bottom of the door.
Bigger puddle forming fast. Grab towels to dam the flow,
and search for a reason. Starting the DW seems to drain the
standing water, but what caused it to retain water????
Fiddled around with the basket that's supposed to direct
"soft food" to the built-in disposer. YUCK!!! Big old
mess, I'm not sure I've ever removed it in the 4+ years it's
been in use. Cleaned it out, finally figured out how it all
goes back together, running a test load.

Beverly, <sigh> I'm supposed to be downstairs sewing.

Oh no fun at all!!! And now you have some making up to do to the little
man. Poor puppy.

The rules the repairman told my DMIL: Never put chunky food in the
dishwasher, even if you have one with a disposal in it; Run the water in
your kitchen sink till it's as hot as it gets before you turn on the DW;
and while the water is running to get hot, run your garbage disposal till
it makes a whooshing noise and you know it's empty. He said doing those 3
things will make your DW work longer, and clean better. Running the
disposal makes sure there is nothing in there to clog the pipe when the DW
drains.

A little late, but well intentioned.... ;)

Yeah, poor little guy must have wondered why Mommy was so
ticked off. :-} He'll get extra banana chips and Science
Diet bones for a few days.

Well, mine is supposed to take care of chunks, but I always
scrape off the big stuff.

This DW has it's own extra hot water heater built in, but
I'll give that a test.

I've been doing that for years, after learning the hard way.

And appreciated. The test load went through just fine, so I
guess I took care of it. One more of those little chores DH
used to do, and I just didn't think about it.

Beverly, off to sew the navy slacks.

Sharon,

Your repairman told you wrong about the water temp. and your garbage
disposer. Run only COLD WATER when using the disposer. This allows any
grease or soft, sticky food to harden and be carried away through the
drain pipes. If you run hot water the grease and food soften and cling
to the pipes and created a sludge downstream when and where they cool
and re-harden. Not good, from a maintenance point of view.

Generally very true, but sometimes it's good to pour boiling heavily
salted water into a drain. Lots of it. That's true of my drains, but
they are cast iron, not plastic.
