Earlier this year there was a discussion on washing machine brands. My 7-yr
old Maytag Neptune front loader died yesterday. The repair person estimated
it would cost $650 - $700 to fix; his fee for making us wait all day for him
and then spending less than half an hour to diagnose the problem was $80.
So DH and I made the decision to purchase a new washing machine.

I'd like to hear about your experiences with washing machines and any
recommendations. My decision to get the Neptune in 1999 was based solely on
brand reputation and loyalty. My dear MIL owned only Maytag appliances; our
first washing machine was a top loading Maytag which lasted 24 trouble-free
years. At the time of the class action lawsuit over the Neptune, the
machine was working so I did not need to fill out a claim so I didn't and
the deadline has passed to do so.

This time around I am doing some homework! Thank you for any advice you can
give me; it is appreciated!

We've had an LG front loader for over 2 years and it's been great. It's
7.5kg (which makes it big enough to wash quilts etc) and has some great
features like delay timer so I can put it on to finish when I get home from
work. It also adjusts water usage according to the size of the load. After
the 10 year old Hoover top loader this was state of the art!

That was only a few months ago. Go to Google groups and look at all the
responses. It was my thread since I needed a new machine to replace my
trusty 20+ year old Maytag top loader. It's quite clear that since
Maytag was sold out, their machines are just not the quality they used
to be. I'm aghast that yours only lasted such a short time.

Whirlpools have the best Consumer Reports rating right now but when I
was hunting, they were grossly overpriced in my region (midwest). My
TOL Bosch cost several hundred less than what Whirlpools were going for
here several months ago. Whirlpool also currently makes the Maytag
Neptunes so I don't completely trust them. I also prefer the feature
set on the Bosch as opposed to the Whirlpool. Where the differences are
few, price obviously makes a big difference. One thing to remember is
that the higher off the ground the washer is, the more it is apt to
vibrate. That may explain why there are so vastly many reports about
the LGs and extreme vibration problems. They are very nice looking and
performing machines with that one huge exception. I almost got one but
for that problem since my laundry room is not slab on grade. Just
Google "LG", "washer" and "vibration" and you'll see what I mean.

Don't overlook the GE and Frigidaires. I've heard positive reports on
them. We opted for the Bosch and I'm so glad we did. The only problem
we had was that the installer mis-installed the drawer. But that was
quickly and easily corrected. The controls are exceptionally easy to
use even though it has every possible setting you could ever want
including an optional hour long soak interval for any of the cycles,
extra hot and super hot temp settings, no spin, drain, pause, both
delicate and hand wash cycles, power wash, quick wash, and the ability
to set the spin speed on every cycle. Everyone was right in that the
front-loaders really do get your clothes cleaner and mine saves a bundle
on detergent. The Bosch service told me to use 1 tablespoon of regular
liquid detergent except for really huge loads. I didn't believe it at
first but it works very well. Good luck... hope you find something that
lasts a lot longer.

Did you figure out how to keep your sleeves from getting twisted up? (I
think that was you...?)
