Corset bones, that is...
I could never see why so may of my renfair and other corset making pals
were using cable ties instead of real boning, and saying how wonderful
they were, so I thought I'd try some and see...

Watch out for the next bit - coming soon!

Reading through the comments, I was struck by someone who
said spiral steel boning by-the-yard was hard to come by.
??? I have several suppliers saved to my bookmarks.
http://www.corsetmaking.com/CMSpages/CMSspiralbone.html http://www.grannd.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=GS&Category_Code=cc-boningbty http://www.farthingales.on.ca/search.php and a goolge search turns up more.
I cannot for the life of me see why someone would choose to
substitute "cable-ties" for "real" boning. It's not like
several varieties and sizes of the real stuff are not
readily available, and it's fairly cheap as well. Let us
know how your comparison comes out, Kate.

Well, that's what *I* thought... As most of the sensible folk I know
here and on Sewbiz could get it, what was the problem? Seems a lot of
folk would rather use the cable ties than go to the bother of
researching and getting the right stuff. When you put so much into a
garment, why not go that little bit further and use the best boning
available?
I could understand it for students on a strict budget, but not for
anyone actually doing this with the time and income some of them seem to
dedicate to it.
And so far I'm not convinced...

Those ties are sold in Home Depot stores, which are almost everywhere
now. So I imagine the people who are using them are those with needs
for immediate gratification. Run to Home Depot, buy lightbulbs, coat
hooks, and cable ties.
Our police carry those cable ties for extra handcuffs in case of larger
numbers of arrestees. ;-)

I think ours do too...
I still can't imagine wanting to use them as corset bones by choice.
