This is the same fabric I asked about below regarding adding body. Now
I want to ask about properly preparing the fabric before cutting out
the jacket. The fabric is from the home decorating dept (drapery) of
the fabric store, it is 98% polyester and 2% metal. The bolt indicates
it should be dry cleaned. Since it is almost 100% polyester, would it
be safe to soak it in cold water and lay it out flat to dry? Or,
should I take it to a cleaners and have them pre-treat it? The last
time I took a fabric to a cleaners to have it "preshrunk" the lady gave
me a blank look - had never hear of "preshrinking"! Then I just asked
her to steam press it ... she understood that. Would that be
appropriate in this case?

Dear Cheryl,
If you're going to make a jacket of this stuff, and it will be dry
cleaned when needed, you don't have to do anything to the fabric to
pre-treat it except iron out any wrinkles.

I'd iron it all over through a slightly-damp cloth. Sometimes
fabrics do odd things when they meet steam for the first time.

I don't know about steam on metallics, but a reputable dry cleaner
will have the answer. If you do try to wash it, you will lose the
luster of the metallic. (Ask me how I know this...)
