Our local quilt guild, of which I'm a member, just finished a quilt camp
yesterday. It was intended as something for children to do for four
afternoons during spring break, but we ended up with only four children
out of 15 "campers". The objectives were to introduce quilting to those
who may not ever have tried it, to have fun, and to have each camper
take home a small, finished quilt. Most didn't quite finish, but all
were close. It was so much fun!
Guild members provided sewing machines, tools, and instruction. Most of
the fabric came from the guild's stash, and I contributed several pieces
of fabric that I felt I could part with, but I was sorely tempted to
snatch some of it out of someone's hands when they headed toward the
cutting table with it! Can't believe how possessive I felt. It was
worth it, though, to see how others had used fabric that I had no plan
for at the time. It was fun wandering around looking at others' work
and seeing my fabric in nearly all of them.
Now the brag part: My own son, nine years old, was the youngest there
and the only male in the group. Everyone else made a very small,
wall-hanging type quilt. None were more than four blocks, several were
less than four blocks. My son, never really having sewn before, decided
he wanted a quilt for his bed, the same size as his comforter. So he
made ten 9-patch blocks (12 inches square), and alternated them with
12-inch fabric squares to make the quilt the right size. He used
camoflage print, and black with tiny white dots, and some greens. His
top is nearly finished, and it's looking great! He did all of the
sewing himself, and I'm so proud of him! I'll try to get a picture
posted somewhere in the next few days. I just have to show everyone!

Can't wait to see it! My 10 y.o. DS wants me to show him how to sew a
Kool-Aid Jammer wallet. I'm excited !
Although he does like to select fabric, it's the first interest he's shown
in the hobby. I know it's more of a craft than actually sewing, but he wants
to sit at the machine....how cool is that?
When you post your pic I'll show my son what your son made. He loves
camoflage anything.
