Olwyn Mary, don't count on rayon to solve your problems. It stains just
like cotton. The t-shirts I have that are rayon or rayon and cotton are
softer than cotton, and wrinkle even when I snatch them from the dryer
still slightly damp and hang them up.

Cotton knit is king. I use old fashioned Fels Naphtha bar soap for
stains. Sometimes it takes 2 washings, but stains leave and the fabric
is fine. Sometimes my mother makes soap from lye and tallow, and this
gentle soap is death on stains, poison ivy and mosquito bites.

Where do you find Fels Naphtha soap. I haven't seen it in years.

My mother used to do laundry in a deep sink and scrub board with
it.She had the cleanest laundry around. I have no intension of using the
scrub board method but do think I like to have a bar around for cleaning
somethings.

Google for it. Vermont Country Store sells it, but so do some other
places online.

You gotta love that Vermont Country Store - even if you don't love their
prices. But I have seen Fels Naptha in the grocery store - it could be
worth asking for it.

The last time I went down the detergent aisle in Owen's (which is
really Kroger), there were three bars of Fels Naptha on the top shelf.
But I find that any real soap will do the job. On a two-week bike
trip once, I took three pairs of white wool socks and washed a pair in
the bathroom sink every night, rubbing them with the hotel soap until
foamy, then rinsing umpty times and rolling in a towel. Much to my
surprise, ancient chain-grease stains vanished.
