I haven't heard them advertised as saving power! We used to have some and
they were good for ensuring that things with stuffing (quilts etc) were an
even thickness after being washed and dried. They were also good for
minimising tangles for things like long sleeves. We used them in the
washing machine and dryer. We picked ours up in a supermarket for Chinatown
for around $2 Australian. Nearly 8 pounds seems a little pricy!

The laundry ladies that showed me this trick just used three tennis
balls in the dryer - much cheaper with the same effect according to
them. I have never tried...just a useful tip I received from the
ladies who worked in a laundromat!

Make sure you use white tennis balls. I have to launder tennis balls
after every flyball tournament and the yellow ones can bleed dye if you
leave them lay against something white.

I have a can of tennis balls that I use in the dryer whenever drying
anything filled with down. It's the only way to keep it from packing
up. Well - I've also used clean tennis shoes, but don't have any now,
just the tennis balls.

I live in an area with water almost hard enough to chew, so I use Boraxo
or White King in the washer, and use about a half-measure of detergent.
I have a front-loading Maytag washer. My clothes are definitely
clean, and I use the additional rinse option in the wash cycle.

Hot-water washes are generally reserved for sunny days, because I have a
solar water heater.

Oh wow... that's cool. How do you like it? Is it economical? Was it
expensive to install? Does it get the water hot enough? Sorry to ask
so many questions!
