For Michigan residents interested in entering the Michigan State
Fair...I want to remind you that you have 2 months remaining to enter
before the Aug. 1st deadline.

I have gotten so many questions from people that just can't figure out
the system.....so I quickly created a website "How to Enter & Win at
the Michigan State Fair" with step by step info on entering, rules &
tips, links to all the official entry forms and information plus
Publicity Flyers to print, post and distribute.

Michigan could sure use a "shot in the arm" with some spirit and
enthusiasm and I figure a grand explosion of folks sharing their
talents in a big bold display at the State Fair is a great start.
Plus, with each entrant getting 2 FREE ADMISSION tickets ($18 value)
coupled with the cost of gasoline....it makes a great, fun-filled
family outing...with shows, entertainment, animals and of course...our
very own favorite Community Arts displays!

Well, that's my invitation to help save the Nations Oldest State Fair
(158yrs)...won't you please enter and share the information with a
talented friend.

Joy,

I think your web pages about the Fair are splendid! You said your
announced intent is to encourage entries...well, if I were a Michigan
resident, I would be persuaded. Your enthusiasm is infectious. :)

Lots of ng members must be perusing your links, because GeoCities had
too much traffic to let me look at everything, and I was so enjoying the
photos of your handiwork. I'll visit again later.

Thanks Doreen!!!
You know, people roll their eyes at me ALL THE TIIME when I am
talking about my belief that the only reason most people don't enter
the State Fair is because they don't know how....and I know they think
I am crazy for thinking that "people still want to do this sort of
thing"....but for whatever reason...I believe!
I believe that we all do have talents to share and that just like the
Worlds Fair is to showcase the best and newest things and ideas from
around the world...so our State Fairs should be the same on their
level. It should be an inspiring venue where the young and the old
can say "WOW!"

I am afraid that the economy in Michigan is so depressed that our
people have lost their wonderful spirit.
Vendors and artists and all the neat places should be represented at
our state fairs.
Our very own Simplicity Pattern Co. is in Mi....wouldn't it be fun if
they participated? I
I actually submitted an idea to a certain large hotel on Macinac
Island that if they sponsored prizes for a quilt contest (Michigan
Quilt Block) then I would assemble the blocks and make a quilt for
them to hang on their wall or smaller lap quilts for their front porch
rockers.....a great connection....great advertising for them....fun
for people who visit the resort to see the quilts and make a
connection......but nobody bothered to respond. FIZZLE. Sad really.
I just look at the Oregon State Fair and so many companies want to
get involved ...like the vegetable packing plants sponsor stuff even!
I can only dream that our fair will once again regain its spirit if WE
MAKE IT HAPPEN by entering and sharing and going and ENJOYING~!
Maybe with the price of gas what it is more people will not go on
exteneded distant holidays this summer but remember to include a fun
family outing to the State Fair!

So Doreen, have you entered your Alabama Fair? I know there probably
isn't anyone so wacky about it as I am...but just "Google" for it and
you can access the premium books online in most states (I know you can
in Alabama because I resource them for ideas).

Joy,

Well, now, you raise a good point, and one I should consider. First,
though, I would want to visit the Fair and observe how the entries are
displayed and protected. My most likely entry would be a quilt, and I'd
not lightly submit something in which so much time and effort is invested.

As a teenager, I went with a 4-H group to the Alabama State Fair at the
fairgrounds between Birmingham and Bessemer...don't remember anything
about exhibits from that trip. Later, as a young mother living in
B'ham, I took my three girls to the Fair several times. We spent most
of our time in the livestock buildings, admiring the rabbits, chickens,
pigs, cows, goats, horses, because that's what my kids were interested
in (and also because there wasn't much money for the attractions of the
midway).

Alabama seems to have a proliferation of fairs...a small town about 30
miles from here hosts the North AL State Fair. Google shows me there
are also NW AL, NE AL, West AL, and South AL State Fairs, and that what
formerly was the Alabama State Fair, the one in B'ham/Bessemer, is now
called the Greater Alabama Fall Fair & Festival. Guess that's the one
I'd want to check out, because it's a lead pipe cinch that entering the
North AL State Fair nearby doesn't inspire me to enter. A unattended
glass-walled room, about 6' x 12' in the corner of the exhibition hall,
is the show area for quilts and afghans. They are displayed folded over
rods, one on top of another, with only a few inches of each one showing.

Perhaps I'll visit my DS in B'ham in September and investigate the
exhibit area at the GAFF&F. Thanks for the push!

The GH doesn't need the publicity. Every tourist brochure, travel
writer, etc. etc. knows about the place, publishes photos of it, yadda
yadda. When I visited the town last fall and talked with some locals,
they mentioned how overrated it is.

Try some of the B&Bs or the large new hotel on the opposite side of the
island (blanking on the name) or the chamber...perhaps they could
invent a new weekend for quilters.
